I have been collecting knit dress patterns for a while now. I have not sewn any of them. I am a wimp when it comes to this type of project – I’m not that well-versed with knits, and I haven’t sewn many dresses because of fit issues of the pear-shaped variety.
Hope – like spring – springs eternal. I am ready to try! I need a dress for the office. Can you help me decide what to sew up?
This is part of The Monthly Stitch’s April Challenge. Please vote in the comments for the dress you think I should sew up, and I’ll do it in April. Here are links, pictures, and a bit of pro and con commentary from me, presented in no particular order:
Pros: Flattering wrap style, with contrast belt for my small waist, sleeves
Cons: Not sure about those gathered shoulder yokes, past experience with Muse had fit problems
2. Vogue 1312
Pros: Very popular and well-reviewed dress, design by Lynn Mozono, edgy style, sleeves
Cons: Too edgy for me? Will the shape flatter me?
Pros: Flattering mock wrap style, very popular and well-reviewed dress, New Look fits me well usually, sleeves
Cons: A little “meh?” Too low-cut?
Pros: Flattering fit-and-flare shape, McCall’s usually fits well. Similar to a old favorite RTW dress. I would make this shorter, without the hi-low hem.
Cons: Cap sleeve or sleeveless – will require a jacket or cardigan for the office. Also, a little “meh?”
Please vote! Thank you!
I like the McCalls one, the shape is flattering and out of them all it’s the nicest in my book.

I made the Gillian (I have been looking for the perfect wrap dress for years- just bought the Maria Denmark one after you pointing me in her direction!), anyway I think my choice of fabric was the problem, it was a cotton/modal mix, very fine and drapey. It clung to bits I don’t like and the gathered shoulder yoke was pretty awful; I also ended up with a seam in the centre of the front waistband that looked a bit yuk. I have found the Tiramisu by Cake patterns very useful (although admittedly not very flattering, people often compliment me when I am wearing one of my versions).
There was a freebie on Burdastyle.com that I made years ago called the Danielle which always turned out well (with a change in the neckline). Of the rest above, I think the New Look is only meh because of the awful fabric it has been shown in, although I agree about the neckline. Good luck!

I actually think the Vogue one is great. There’s a version in grey on the vogue site (https://voguepatterns.mccall.com/v1312) that really shows off the drape of the skirt and it looks fabulous. Yes, you’re right this is the most adventurous style-wise, but you must have been drawn to the pattern in the first place, so I’m guessing that you did harbour thoughts of making this at some point!

Thanks for the vote! I am drawn to it – but can I pull it off?

New Look with a minor heightening of the neckline is my vote 🙂

I like the Vogue one. Such a beautiful and classic design. I’ve just opened my voting pole. Can you help me making a choice? https://wp.me/p77VK1-1uK

Sometimes I think it is good to wear things that are outside our comfort zone. I checked out some versions of this online and they all looked wonderful.
